Extended Saharan dust layers have been observed in the region between 8.5 • N and 34 • N in 5 an altitude range between 2 and 6 km. The continental, North African origin of the probed air masses is confirmed by 8-day backward trajectories. The Saharan dust is characterized by an optical depth in the range of 0.1 and 0.3, a depolarization around 10% and high lidar ratios of 45 sr at 532 nm and 75 sr at 355 nm. The backscattering by the dust particles at the UV-wavelength is relatively weak, resulting in a negative 10 color index. From the measured optical properties the effective radius and the refrac-tive index of the dust particles are derived using a new approach based on Mie Theory and non-spherical scattering calculations. The low backscatter coefficient observed at 355 nm is due to significant absorption which increases with decreasing wavelength. This finding agrees very well with results from satellite and sun photometer measure-15 ments. The effective radii decrease from about 3 µm base to 0.6 µm at the top of the dust plumes. The non-spherical shapes of the dust particles are responsible for the high values of the lidar ratios.

Organic Farming by Using Different Desert Soiles Could it be an Alternative to Fertilizers?

It is shown that Saharan soil has the potential of producing bioavailable iron when illuminated with visible light and also it contains some essential macronutrient and micronutrient elements. In this study, these properties of the desert soil were tested on the certified wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L. var. gonen 98) using Hewitt nutrient solution, illuminated and non-illuminated soil so...

Coarse particles from Saharan dust and daily mortality.

BACKGROUND Winds from the Sahara-Sahel desert region regularly transport large amounts of dust to the Americas, North Africa, and Europe. The presence of high dust concentrations for long periods of time, and the interaction between dust and man-made air pollution, raise concerns about adverse health effects and appropriate interventions by health authorities. This study tested the hypothesis t...

Saharan dust and association between particulate matter and case-specific mortality: a case-crossover analysis in Madrid (Spain)

BACKGROUND Saharan dust intrusions are a common phenomenon in the Madrid atmosphere, leading induce exceedances of the 50 μg/m(3)--EU 24 h standard for PM10. METHODS We investigated the effects of exposure to PM(10) between January 2003 and December 2005 in Madrid (Spain) on daily case-specific mortality; changes of effects between Saharan and non-Saharan dust days were assessed using a time-...

Observations of Saharan dust layer electrification

Electrification of atmospheric dust influences the coagulation, wet removal and fall speeds of dust particles. Alignment of dust particles can also occur in fair weather atmospheric electrical conditions if the particles are charged. However, very few electrical measurements made in elevated dust layers exist. Balloon-borne charge and particle instrumentation have been used to investigate the e...

Measurements of Saharan dust aerosols over the Eastern Mediterranean using elastic backscatter-Raman lidar, spectrophotometric and satellite observations in the frame of the EARLINET project

We report on the vertical distributions of Saharan dust aerosols over the N.E. Mediterranean region, which were obtained during a typical dust outbreak on August 2000, by two lidar systems located in Athens and Thessaloniki, Greece, in the frame of the European EARLINET project. MODIS and ground sun spectrophotometric data, as well as air-mass backward trajectories confirmed the existence of Sa...

Saharan Dust Corrections for the Envisat Aatsr Sst Product

The Advanced Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) on board ENVISAT is the third in a series of instruments, together with ATSR-1 and -2 on board ERS 1 & 2, to establish a 16 year dataset of high accuracy (±0.3K) skin sea surface temperature (SST) data. These data are extremely useful for climate change and numerical weather prediction (NWP). However, tropospheric aerosols such as Saharan dus...
